Yesterday's Elections Results

It was very gratifying to see Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin cause the Republicans to lose a congressional seat that they have controlled for over a century. I wonder if they will work their magic in Illinois next year and help elect a Democrat to Obama's former seat. It appears that moderate Republican Mark Kirk is seeking Sarah Palin's endorsement in the hopes of avoiding the fate that befell Republican Dede Scozzafava in New York's 23rd District.

  1. Claims that the Republicans have controlled the district for over a century are incorrect. See for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NY-23 . They've controlled it for 16 years which in congressional terms is close to an eternity. But the century claim that keeps getting repeated is just wrong.

  2. The geographical area that carried the 23rd district designation 16 years ago appears to have been located in the south central section of New York state rather than where the present day 23rd lies. I think the stories about long Republican control refer to the general area rather than the particular numerical designation.
